Claws of creation. NGC 6334, or the Cat's Paw Nebula, is a massive star-forming region located 4,000 light-years away in Scorpius. While often depicted in red in visible light, the infrared view reveals a chaotic, turbulent scene of gas and dust.

The nebula is dominated by four circular, luminous blue regions—the 'pads' of the paw—where massive young stars are carving bubbles in the surrounding molecular cloud. Brown-orange filaments of dust stretch between these regions, creating a web of material that is being eroded by the intense starlight. Fiery red clumps mark the sites of active star formation. This is a region where the birth of stars is actively destroying the cloud that created them, a fleeting moment of equilibrium in cosmic time.
