The Galactic Garden (Trifid & Lagoon)

A new eye on the sky. This massive, 5-gigapixel image represents the 'First Light' capabilities of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Unlike the narrow, deep gaze of Webb, Rubin captures the sweep of the cosmos. Here, two giants of the summer sky—the Trifid Nebula and the Lagoon Nebula—are framed together in a single, high-resolution vista.

The Trifid (top) is a study in contrast: pink emission nebulae, blue reflection nebulae, and dark dust lanes dividing it into three lobes. Below lies the Lagoon, a turbulent nursery of giant stars. This image combines 678 exposures taken over 7 hours, revealing an intricate web of dust lanes and star clusters. It is the 'Grand Format' experience defined—a wide-angle view of our galactic neighborhood, best appreciated at our largest format.
